HONOLULU (KITV4) — High anticipation surrounding the fast-approaching summer months has members of Hawaii’s tourism industry eager for a rebound of great proportions.
“Thank goodness month-over-month we’re starting to see a gradual but steady and sure rebuild of business volume into Hawaii,” explained Peter Shaindlin, COO of Halekulani.
After nearly a three-year hiatus, an influx of both foreign and domestic travelers is expected as the travel bug is being re-ignited in everyone.
“There are more inquiries into our Tokyo office,” said Eric Takahata with Hawaii Tourism Japan. “There are a ton more inquiries onto the travel companies and into the airlines to fly here, especially Hawaii. [It] is the number one desired destination for the Japanese visitor to come back to.”
Friday kicks off the annual celebration of Japan’s Golden Week. And for the first time since the beginning of the pandemic, Hawaii’s leading international visitors will be welcomed back.
“We can’t wait,” gushed The Royal Hawaiian’s marketing director, Sam Shenkus. “We’re going to have thousands this week, but in the summer, we will have about 150,000 people each month.”
The upcoming Golden Week festivities are a significant milestone in the revitalization of local tourism and are a direct reflection of national projections for leisure travel.
Industry experts predict 2022 is the year the United States sees pre-pandemic levels of travel.
Those in Hawaii’s hospitality industry noting they’re ready and able to serve the summer surge.
