POINT PLEASANT, W.Va. — Did you know that a National Historical Park is located just an hour’s drive from Point Pleasant? Some of our members have seen a sign in Chillicothe, Ohio, leading to State Route 104 about the park but never took the time to check it out.
For the June club meeting, several members traveled to Chillicothe, Ohio, to visit Hopewell Culture National Park, a part of the National Park Service U.S. Department of the Interior. The park visitor center is located at Mound City Group site located at 16062 State Route 104, two miles north of US 35.
Upon arriving at the visitor center, members viewed an orientation film about the Hopewell cultural traditions from about AD 1 to 400. Next we visited the museum to see many of the most spectacular artifacts that were deposited beneath the mounds — among them mica mirrors, copper ornamental regalia and animal effigy tobacco smoking pipes.
We then walked out the back door to the terrace that offers a striking view of the mounds. These two dozen densely clustered mounds surrounded by a low earthen wall site is the only fully restored Hopewell earthwork complex.
It was a very hot day so we did not attempt to walk the site. One member did walk to the earthen wall entrance. We were reminded that Mound City is still considered a sacred place by many people and that we were to treat the earthworks with respect.
The Hopewell peoples were named for Capt. Mordecai Hopewell, who owned the farm where part of an extensive earthwork site was excavated in 1891. Other sites of the Hopewell Culture National Historical Park include Seip Earthworks and Hopewell Mound Group (open year-round) and Hopeton Earthworks and High Bank Works (closed to the public except by permit or special events).
Our next stop was to visit Adena Mansion and Gardens. When we finally located the site, it was closed on Tuesday, so that visit will have to wait until another trip. The group enjoyed lunch at Red Lobster and did some shopping before starting home.
The CEOS Club program for June was “Mounds of West Virginia” but since we had seen some of these mounds, we decided to broaden our horizon and travel to Chillicothe. It was a very informative and enjoyable day trip.
Our club year will be starting soon, so we would like to invite anyone interested in becoming a member to contact Phyllis Hesson at 304-675-3173 or Darlene Haer at 304-675-6002.
