AYDEN — The Ayden Collard Festival Art Show is primed to begin its 13th year on Friday at the Community Building at 458 Second St., just a block away from the festival grounds.
The show will feature a variety of mediums and is open to artists of all ages. This year was easier than ever for artists to submit their work to the show, said Faye Warren, one of the organizers and the former show chair.
“We have our students, local artists and we get lots of participation from surrounding counties as well,” she said, “This year, we have a new entry system that is digitized and it is so easy to use. Our team has been working very hard on this and it’s something I’ve been fighting hard to get as a founder of the show.”
The show has received about 250 adult pieces and more than 200 youth pieces in the past, and Warren expects to see those numbers return after the pandemic lowered participation last year.
This is also the first year the art show will be fully supported by the Collard Festival.
“We had been self-supporting for 12 years, so last year, I went to the festival committee and argued that we should receive the support of the festival because we had proven ourselves. They agreed because they saw the benefits of the art show and now we don’t have to go out and raise our own money to make this happen.”
Process
Artists are allowed up to three entries at $5 per entry. Youth submit their entries for free. The categories include oil, acrylic, watercolor and other painting styles along with drawing, photography, jewelry making, quilting, digital art and much more.
Contestants filled out online registration forms and brought submissions to the Community Building on Sunday and Monday. Judging is set for today. The show opens Friday and will continue through Sunday, Sept. 11.
The community building is next door to Ayden Historical and Arts Society Museum in the old Dixon Medical Building, 554 Second St. The museum is open from 10:30 to 2:30 p.m. every Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday.
Receptions, awards
This is the first time the student and youth artists will hold a separate reception from the adults. Both will take place tonight at the community building.
The Student Artist Reception will begin at 5:45 p.m. followed by the Student Award Ceremony at 6:15 p.m. The Adult Award Ceremony will begin at 6:45 p.m. followed by the Adult Artist Reception at 7:15 p.m. All art will be left on display until 4 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 11.
Warren said she is “so excited to see how this team of young, enthusiastic team members organizing the show accepts the challenge.”
