Melissa Tucker, an oil painter from Greenbrier, participates in the 2019 Art in the Park event. This year’s artisan festivities begin at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 24 at J. Travis Price Park.
After a two-year hiatus, Art in the Park, presented by the Willow Oak Center for Arts & Learning and Springfield Parks & Recreation, is set this Saturday, Sept. 24 at J. Travis Price Park.
The juried fine arts and folk festival, or artist-only vendor event, is in its 12th year and begins at 10 a.m. that day, continuing until 4 p.m. It is free to the public.
According to Lacie Beu, marketing, communications, and event coordinator at Willow Oak, 50-plus artisan booths from Middle Tennessee and southern Kentucky will line the park, in addition to food vendors.
Attendees will get to check out numerous handmade artisan creations like drawings, jewelry, pottery, glass art and oil paintings, as well as fine crafting and fiber arts, to name a few.
The overall goal, Beu explained, is to share and celebrate “our artists and our community.”
“It’s important because, to me, artists help create vibrance in our community,” she added.
Also, this year’s event will expand on its live demonstrations to include a blacksmith, who will use a coal forge, anvil, and hammer to create utensils and hooks. Plus, demonstrations in fiber spinning and woodturning are also planned.
A first for the event will be the community art project, Beu noted.
“It’s a collaborative weaving project,” she said. “We hope it will be a backdrop for somewhere in the community.”
Free face painting and other art projects will be underway on-site, with live music planned throughout the day.
Nashville’s 107.5 The River will broadcast live from 10 a.m. to noon, followed by the Hot Club Rendezvous, a Nashville jazz ensemble, from noon to 1 p.m.
Then, students of Mr. Perry’s Music in Springfield will take the stage from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m., with Robertson County’s The Luke Munday Band beginning at 2 p.m. and closing out the day’s festivities.
“Hopefully, (guests) will walk away with a piece of art, something one of a kind,” Beu said of the event.
