The “Knights in Armor” exhibit will kick off the Frist Art Museum’s New Family Sundays.
With free admission for people 18 and younger and a designated all-age art making area, the Frist Art Museum has more than earned its reputation as a family friendly destination.
And this month, it is building on that with its interactive Family Sunday programs that will take place the second Sunday of each month and started on Aug. 14.
Samantha Andrews, experiential learning director at the Frist, said the special family days start with a family tour at 1:15 p.m. where docents bring the exhibitions to life during 20-minute tours designed for families.
This month, with the “Knights in Armor” exhibit, the Sunday Frist experience is especially kid friendly, with the family tours being paired with a “multisensory station” and with related Martin ArtQuest Gallery art activities.
Andrews said that each month the “Multisensory Exploration Station” will be filled with “a lot of tactile objects – things all ages can touch, smell and listen to, that are tied to the exhibition.”
“Visitors of all ages have been loving the exhibit and related activities, particularly our youngest visitors,” Andrews said.
She said that once the children explore the exhibit on the tour or on their own, they can go into ArtQuest for “Knights in Armor” related activities to decorate their own tournament shields, try on weights to see what it is like to wear various pieces of armor, make horse armor out of aluminum foil, animate mythical creatures and build block castles.
She said that as the Frist prepared for its in-person comeback, the Sunday Family Days emerged as a top priority.
“Sunday is a great day for families and for being downtown. It is quiet downtown, parking is easy, and we have a lot going on,” she said. Sunday hours at the Frist are 1-5:30 p.m.
Frist officials say that in the post-COVID months, they are restoring programming and creating new experiences. The art museum is still closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, but it has recently reinstated its Thursday evening programming, when there is “drop-in drawing” and sometimes live music, film screenings, tours, lectures and other activities. College students with ID get in free from 5-8 p.m. on Thursdays.
“We are also trying to build back our docent and volunteer program,” said Andrews, who said the Frist is seeking new volunteers for many of its programs. Details on volunteer opportunities: https://fristartmuseum.org/?s=volunteer+opportunities
