German culture was on display as the Delaware Saengerbund held its annual Oktoberfest over the weekend.
The annual event was held at the Saengerbund’s Salem Church Road property Friday through Sunday.
According to Hans Nafzinger, who is on the organizing committee for Oktoberfest, the event has been going on for more than 40 years. In the beginning, it was just for Saengerbund club members to attend, but 10 years after Oktoberfest began, the event was made available to the public.
“The expected attendance for this weekend is around 20,000,” Nafzinger said, adding that Oktoberfest gives locals a way to connect with their German heritage.
The event celebrated many aspects of German culture, including music, dancing and food, such as bratwurst, German potato salad, and sauerkraut. There were also a number of German-style beers offered in the beer garden.
Some visitors came dressed in traditional German garb, such as lederhosen (buck skin leather pants) dirndls (a traditional German-style dress with apron), shawls and hats.
Jamey Mikels and his wife, German native Michaela Bender, who are regulars at Oktoberfest, were enjoying the beer garden.
“I get to meet nice people. Everybody’s friends,” Mikels said.
Mikels and Bender, who have been going to Oktoberfest for over 20 years, sit in basically the same spot every year and invite people to sit at their table.
Jesse Greaves and Shawna Webster came all the way from Washington, D.C., to attend their first ever Oktoberfest.
“I’m having a super amount of fun,” said Greaves, whose grandparents are German. “Definitely has an overall holistic sense of fun here.”
Greaves also appreciated all the local breweries and craft brewers that were helping out the club with Oktoberfest by providing their style of German beers.
