Jackson Hole painter Deb Penk, whose art hangs from California to New York, has new work to display at the Amaran gallery on East Broadway for the 2022 Jackson Hole Fall Arts Festival, which kicks off today.
Penk will be at the gallery from 4 to 7 p.m. Sept. 14-15.
“I’ll be working on a piece there during the show, talking to people,” Penk said.
Spectators will be able to meet the artist and to watch her process as it happens. Penk is originally from Wisconsin but has lived in Wyoming for 38 years.
“I love Wyoming,” she said. “I’ll never leave Wyoming. I usually paint cowgirls and cowboys because I love the romance, but I also do classic cars, bike rallies, Americana.”
She describes her style as “a mix between Andy Warhol and Norman Rockwell.” With their bright colors and attitude-filled subjects, her portraits are instantly recognizable.
“I think it’s important for people to see a piece of work and instantly know the artist,” she said.
Penk starts a work with photograph that she creates in photo shoots with models, friends, even strangers.
“I saw this one young lady sitting on a flatbed, reading a catalog, outside of the Snow King Center,” she said. “Immediately I thought what a great painting it would make. Asking permission to photo her, then getting permission to paint her, she was on a canvas a few months later.”
That painting, titled “Dream Catcher,” is hanging at the Nicolaysen Art Museum in Casper. Two more Penks hang in the Teton Pines — portraits of cowboy and sculptor Chris Navarro — and several are in the Raymond James Investment Company on Broadway.
Penk hasn’t been able to do shows for the past few years because of the coronavirus pandemic.
“I’m just starting to get back into them,” she said.
That means she’ll have a few new pieces that are just now being shown to the public.
“I paint everyday life,” she said. “As long as everyone’s living life, I have something to paint. I can’t imagine ever running out of ideas.”
