A member of Kingston Pike Baptist Church in Lenoir City wants to inspire children at Vacation Bible School with her chalk drawings of religious scenes.
“We hope to help the kids get in touch with their artistic side,” Mary Ward said.
Ward was creating a colorful chalk rendering Friday that depicted Jesus surrounded by children. VBS students were studying art and the Bible through “Spark Studios,” which is distributed by Lifeway.
The summer program is designed to spark and propel creativity into high gear. Children learn that God’s creativity didn’t stop in Genesis. As the master artist, God is working to redeem, reclaim and transform his creation to the design he planned for us.
A 2018 graduate of Lenoir City High School, Ward is enrolled in Pellissippi State Community College. She is planning to add to her artistic skills by studying animation.
Ward has been involved in creating chalk portraits at the Dogwood Arts Chalk Fest and the Island Chalk Fest in Pigeon Forge.
In fact, most of her work is in chalk following inspiration during her high school years.
Her mother, Kelly Ward, said she always had artistic talent, although Mary has also been involved in entertainment as a puppeteer, clown and creator of balloon sculptures.
“She has always liked to draw and paint,” Kelly said.
Mary worked from an image on her cellphone. While she usually draws faces and heads, this is the first time she has tried to render completed bodies of her subjects. The sidewalk on which she was drawing is directly outside the VBS classroom.
“Maybe the children will be inspired when they pass by on their way to Bible study,” she said.
